Green Schools in the Copper Country:
Tour the sustainable features of the new Hancock Middle/High School
The Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative will host a tour of the new Hancock Middle/High School from 6:00-7:30 pm on Thursday, Feb.10, led by engineer Lou Meyette and architect Jen Towles of OHM. The tour will focus on "green school design" features, including site selection, building envelope, lighting, ventilation, energy efficient heating/cooling and efficient use of electricity. Chassell High School science teacher, Mary Markham, will share her experience at the 1st Annual National Green Schools Conference and some of the exciting activities happening at the national level to create “green schools.” The public is invited to attend. The tour will begin in the commons area just inside the high school front doors.

Mr. Meyette is a registered Professional Engineer and Project Manager at Orchard, Hiltz & McCliment, Inc. (OHM). He is responsible for electrical and mechanical systems design. With over 22 years of industry experience, Mr. Meyette has vast experience with electrical controls, power distribution systems, building energy modeling, energy audits, and energy efficient designs.
Ms. Towles is a registered Architect and LEED Accredited Professional. With over 11 years of industry experience, Ms. Towles leads the architectural division at the northern Michigan office of Orchard, Hiltz & McCliment, Inc. (OHM). She has a wide range of experience involving both new construction and renovations. With LEED AP status, Ms. Towles is very knowledgeable of sustainable design practices and materials.
Both Hancock High School and Hancock Middle School are participating in the Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative (LSSI). The Initiative brings together schools and community partners to prepare K-12 students to become knowledgeable citizens concerned about the Lake Superior watershed and actively engaged in stewardship projects in their community. To date, 75 teachers and 1609 K-12 students from fourteen schools and eight school districts in the Copper Country ISD are participating, together with forty-eight community partners, in fourteen LSSI school-community stewardship projects.
